The acclaimed DJ, producer, radio host, and label owner Darin Epsilon from Los Angeles USA is often referred to as one of the leaders of the Progressive & Tech House scene. His Perspectives radio show and podcast, along with his frequent guest appearances on Sirius/XM Satellite Radio, allow him to reach tens of thousands of listeners on a regular basis. Also his SoundCloud page alone has over 400,000 total plays and receives a whopping 10,000 plays per month. He launched his record label Perspectives Digital back in November 2010 which is an extension of the brand and further solidifying his influence and presence within the global dance music community. Darin Epsilon was also named one of the winners of the John Digweed & Beatport’s DJ Competition in the summer of 2011.
VMM is excited to now catch up with Darin Epsilon to speak to him about his recent mix compilation called Perspectives Digital Vol. 3. This third compilation from his record label Perspectives Digital has been once again hand-picked by Darin some of the highest quality Progressive and Tech House tracks which he feels perfectly capture the “Perspectives” sound. With his exceptional track selection and ability to know what makes a hit, he was previously able to steer his Perspectives Digital Vol. 2 to No:#6 on Beatport’s Top 100 Progressive House Releases chart and we are sure he beholds the same high Perspective qualities for his Perspectives Digital Vol. 3. The Interview:
Hi there Darin we hope all is well and great to speak to speak to you here in the VMM!
VMM Q: The VMM would like to ask you, Darin, how is 2012 shaping up for you so far?
Hey Bex! Thanks for inviting me to do the interview, it’s a real pleasure. It has been an exciting year so far. I have had two strong singles titled ‘Metamorph’ and ‘Bahamut’ released at the beginning of the year that got plays from Sasha, Hernan Cattaneo, and Dave Seaman with Sasha including ‘Metamorph’ in his tag set with James Zabiela during Miami WMC. Following all that, I have a track coming out on Perfecto Records that was selected by the one and only Paul Oakenfold for his next compilation album. I’ve also had the chance to perform in Peru, UK, and Dominican Republic, and I am getting ready to tour Costa Rica, Kenya, and Mexico so all going very well in 2012.
VMM Q: You have released Perspectives Digital Vol. 3 on your own imprint Perspectives Digital. Can you tell us more about the label?
Perspectives Digital is named after my Perspectives radio show and podcast that I’ve had for over 5 years. I added the word “Digital” to indicate that it’s a digital record label. There was basically a point in my career when I decided it was time to have my own label. I really wanted to build the Perspectives brand name and show the world the best underground House music the world has to offer.
I’ve signed artists from all over the world, including ones from Russia, Spain, Canada, Poland, Holland, Argentina, Ireland, Japan, the UK and many more countries too. Some of our most popular ones include Cid Inc, Dousk, Eelke Kleijn, Satoshi Fumi, Luis Junior, Ian O’Donovan, and Deepfunk. You can find our full Perspectives Digital roster at this link: http://bit.ly/perspectivesdigital
We just released an amazing track by DAVI called ‘Labyrinth’, which was played on Above & Beyond’s Trance Around The World radio show. Next we have quality releases by Mariano Favre, Kastis Torrau & Arnas D, Fiord, and Jamie Stevens from Infusion. Anyone interested in submitting unsigned tracks to Perspective Digital you can email them to: demos@perspectivesdigital.com
VMM Q: You are becoming a renowned music producer, so how would you define your sound now in 2012?
I dislike being pigeonholed into one genre, so I primarily consider myself a connoisseur of Progressive House, Tech House, Techno, and Deep House. This flexibility has allowed me to play at a wide range of events and appeal to more than one group of people. I think it’s basically my job to find all the great tracks and bring them together into one fluid and cohesive set. There’s just so much great music out there and it would become boring very fast if I were to play the same sound throughout an entire show.
VMM Q: Your Perspectives radio show is becoming massively successful. Congratulations on that! Can you explain to VMM readers who may not have tuned in before what your show is all about?
Thanks Bex! Well, Perspectives has been on the air for over 5 years. It originally began on DI.fm but is now aired online exclusively at FriskyRadio.com, as well as several FM stations around the world. I always feature an hour of my own selections and then a guest in the second half of the show. The purpose of the show is to showcase the latest and greatest Progressive House, Tech House, and Deep House tunes on a monthly basis. I fell in love with the sound nearly 10 years ago and this is my way of giving back to the scene. Anyone interested in catching up can download all previous episodes for FREE from http://www.soundcloud.com/darinepsilon or from iTunes. VMM Q: Can you tell us what upfront tunes and brand new material you have included on this massive “Perspectives Digital Vol. 3” mix compilation?
Asides from my own personal favourites, which I have signed to the label in the past 3 months, the compilation also comes with a previously unreleased track of mine titled ‘Goodbye World’ under my Eventide alias. It’s very uplifting and melodic, and not really what I would consider my usual sound, but I wanted to prove to people that I’m capable of producing more than one style of music. I have also included six additional tracks that were not previously signed to Perspectives Digital, of which I feel perfectly capture the “Perspectives” sound.
VMM Q: The compilation is packed full of talent and great tracks, including your own remixes and originals. Can you tell us what your favourite tracks are from this album?
That’s really difficult to say because I believe every piece has its own unique feel with different emotions and soundscapes. The opening track is exceptional, this is the Tom Glass’ remix of Gosh & Kanov and the Satoshi Fumi’s remix of Ian O’Donovan reminds me of Derrick May’s track called ‘Strings of Life’, which is one of the most classic Detroit Techno records of all time. Also I have also been heavily supporting DAVI ‘Labyrinth’ and the Luis Junior remix of my track ‘Metamorph’ in my recent sets.
Big thank you to Darin Epsilon for taking time out to speak with us. Perspectives Digital Vol. 3 is available now on Beatport and all other stores on June 12th!
