VMM Interview with Ferry Corsten’s fourth studio album, WKND -New State/Flashover Recordings
It’s time. The new Ferry Corsten studio album, WKND (New State/Flashover), will be released on the 24th of February 2012. We speak to the Dutch EDM icon, Ferry Corsten here in the VMM to ask him all about the makings of this massive artist album and more…
The Interview:
VMM Q: You have achieved so much over the last 20 years, with so many awards and hits across the world’s dance charts. Can you tell the VMM what ambitions you have for 2012?
FERRY CORSTEN: First on the list is the album release. I am very excited and can’t wait to hear the reactions of everybody about WKND. I will also be hosting a lot more ‘Full On Ferry’ events this year all around the world. Of course, my radio mixshow, Corsten’s Countdown, episode 250 is coming up, as well, which I am very excited about.
VMM Q: “Brute” is a massive track from the WKND album and you made it with Armin van Buuren. What was it like working with your close friend in the studio and will we be hearing more from this dynamic duo in the coming months?
FERRY CORSTEN: Working with Armin was such a blast. I have known Armin for a long time now and I have always seen him as a good friend. The collaboration really came about naturally, and maybe we can make something happen again in the future.
VMM Q: We see from the tracklist you have also teamed up with a number of vocalists on the WKND album. What sort of vocal do you look for when choosing a voice for a Ferry Corsten track?
FERRY CORSTEN: It just has to have a certain sound to it which I like. It just has to complete the total picture of a track. For WKND, I had lyrics with a positive vibe in mind and all of the vocalists I worked with delivered. I really fell in love with all of the vocals on WKND and they add a lot to all of the tracks, making them complete.
VMM Q: Do you get attached to the tracks you write, and what is your most treasured track from the new WKND album?
FERRY CORSTEN: I think my favorite track is, “Ain’t No Stoppin’” ft Ben Hague, or “Live Forever” ft Aruna, or “Not Coming Down” ft Betsie Larkin, or, “Take Me,” or….or….. I can’t choose, I really can’t.
VMM Q: This year marks 20 years of your making music and as one of the world’s biggest names and icons in the electronic dance music scene. How has your life changed since you began making your first waves in the industry?
FERRY CORSTEN: When I first started making music, I always did it as a hobby and I never thought it would explode as it did. Now I am traveling around the world, meeting so many people and making my fans smile with my music. I’ve become a father, got married. It has just been an amazing ride!
VMM Q: The WKND tour is kicking off and you will be hitting a host of amazing venues and cities in the next three months. Can you tell the VMM how you keep your energy up and your performances fresh as you travel across the world?
FERRY CORSTEN: Actually, it’s kicking off in Phoenix, Arizona, in the U.S., on February 22nd and I’ll be touring longer than three months. With ‘Full On Ferry,’ we’re planning a world tour and will have a WKND showcase included in the ‘Full On Ferry’ shows. It might sound corny, but I really get my energy from the crowd I play for.
