VMM The Label DOJO
The VMM speaks to the Resident DJ for Gatecrasher & Perverted Audio the highly talented DJ Oliver Lang the owner of DOJO Records. We find out all about the DOJO label to see what plans Oliver has for the future for his label and what new releases we can look out for in the coming months hitting the download portals and dj decks around the globe.
The Interview:
Hi Oliver hope the VMM finds you well!
QVMM: Can you tell the VMM a little history about DOJO and why you decide to launch the DOJO Records label?
OLIVER LANG: Dojo was originally an idea spawn in Ibiza 5 years ago as a platform for releasing my own material. 3 years later the whole record industry changed and as a result, it seemed to me, to become saturated with mediocre music even though there was lots of great music going unheard which was madness to me. My aim with dojo is to give new producers a platform for their music and getting them involved with other people too whilst maintaining quality control.
VMM Q: Oliver can you tell the VMM about some of the artists that you have currently signed to your DOJO Recordings?
OLIVER LANG: I have Richard Dinsdale who I’ve been a fan of for years, Elio Riso the long standing Space Ibiza resident, Digital Narcotics who haven’t been writing long but are already doing great things and Dirty Harris and Shafe, these guys are some of the best producers I’ve heard in ages, and I am really excited to be working with them.
VMM Q: For the new listener just discovering DOJO Recordings for the first time can you describe the labels different sounds in a few words, and what genres do you feel fit your label imprint best?
OLIVER LANG: Tech house madness and chunky deep house grooves.
VMM Q: Can you tell the VMM what releases do you have coming out in the coming months on DOJO Recordings and do they include any Oliver Lang tracks?
OLIVER LANG: I’ve got the Ibiza weapons ep due out in august which will be a collection of artists from Dojo, almost like an introduction to the label. I currently have a CD covermount on the front of DJ Mag Ibiza which I will be releasing as a bundle download through Dojo then I aim to release an EP with my own material at the end of September…its great actually because having my own label has allowed me to experiment more with my music so the EP will be very varied in style.
VMM Q: Oliver do you do all the A&R for the DOJO Record label or do you have an A&R Team signing records for you how dose it work for you?
OLIVER LANG: I have Robin on my team who has a good ear to the ground, but I do almost all the a&r myself, its great being resident for Bora Bora Ibiza as I get a lot of promos sent to me at least a few hundred a week – and usually there is always a gem waiting to be unearthed.
VMM Q: Where can we buy your DOJO digital releases from?
OLIVER LANG: All good digital retailers including beatport, itunes etc. Check out the latest news at www.dojomusic.com
VMM Q: Can you tell the VMM how do you manage this growing DOJO label and your OLIVER LANG career how do you juggle the two?
OLIVER LANG: Very good question indeed, I have a relentless manager Melissa who keeps me on my toes, its important, I don’t think id remember to do a lot of things without a good team.
VMM Q: Records labels do host club nights so the VMM would like to ask will you be doing any DOJO Nights in the UK or in Ibiza in the near future Oliver have thought of doing this at all?
OLIVER LANG: Yes indeed, I’ve outlined this in my plans from day dot, there are a couple of things in the pipeline but my lips are sealed for now…
VMM Q: The VMM would like to ask can you tell the budding DJ producer what do you look for in a track that you may decide to sign to the DOJO Label?
OLIVER LANG: Just simply something id play, be it in a club or in my car, just something groovy and cool and will get a crowd excited.
VMM Q: The VMM would like to know where can budding up and coming dj producers send any unsigned material for you’re A&R team to hear, and also where can we check out info on your DOJO Record label online?
OLIVER LANG: DOJO are always on the look out for new tracks – please send demos to demos@dojomusic.com. For info and news check out the following links
